Simulation for Performances of Dual Stage Passenger Airbag Systems

The restraint performance and protective performance for different size passengers of dual stage passenger airbag systems have been studied with computer simulation method. Against various inflator output partitions, vent hole diameter sizes and ignition delay time, simulations are carried out for unbelted sled test of 50th percentile male and 5th percentile female adult dummy in a 48 kmph simulated crash environment, and belted sled test of 50th percentile male dummy in a 56 kmph simulated crash environment. Simulating test results are compared and analyzed. It is concluded that the dual stage airbag systems have more improvement over the traditional single stage systems in terms of providing high speed collision protection and reducing injury to various passengers and passengers in different positions.
