Electromagnetic Emission of Cipher Chips and Its Role in Cryptoanalysis
With the model of an inverter, which is the basic unit of CMOS devices, we investigated the origin of the electromagnetic (EM) emanations, show their relationship with the data operated in the device. Then, we study both two types of EM emanations, with a handmade coils to capture the directed emanations and a modulate receiver to capture the modulated EM emanations. Third, with an experiment of EM side channel attack against a prototype RSA implemented in a microcontroller, we show how EM emanations could be used in recovering secret keys used in a cipher device.
