The Test and Control System for the Multi-stage Electromagnetic Coil Launcher

In order to transfer the electric energy from the charged capacitor to the electromagnetic (EM) coil launcher in a short time interval, a special switch system is used to endure the high voltage and the heavy current. According to the principle of longevity, handling facility and high reliability, a gap switch was chosen in the EM launch experiment. Considering the theory of gap discharge, the gap switch system for EM coil launcher was developed. The system consisted of three parts: the optical control part, the trigger system and the gap switch. The optical control part and the trigger system was connected by optical fiber for barrage jamming comes from the strong plus current, and the trigger system was shielded by the metal covering so as to circulate reliably in the complicated electromagnetic environment. The parameters of the gap switch system were the delay time 1.2 μs and the shake time within 300ns in the experiment, satisfying the need of the multistage EM coils launcher.
