Measurement of Corrosion Properties of Hot-Eztruded AZ31 Magnesium Alloys

The corrosion behavior of hot-extruded AZ31 magnesium alloys were measured by galvanic tests in 3 wt% NaCl solution at room temperature. The results showed that hot extrusion could increase the corrosion potentials and the corrosion resistance of AZ31 alloys. After extrusion at 623K, the galvanic current density of AZ31 alloy increased with increasing extrusion ration; Moreover, compared with the as-cast AZ31 alloy, the galvanic corrosion resistance can be increased by 10% when extruded at 623K with extrusion ratio of 50. Further microstructure studies of the AZ31 alloys showed that the improvement of corrosion resistance of AZ31 alloys by hot-extrusion were due to the grain refinement and the homogeneous distribution of intermetallic phases throughout the matrix.
