Ezperimental Study of Mechanical Properties on Rusting Steel Wires

The tension, repeatedly bending and twisting of non-rusting, rusting and old wire ropes that the specification is 6×19, the rope diameter is 26 mm and the wire diameter is 1.7 mm is made according to experimental method in MT 716-2005 and MT 717-1997 in this paper. The loss of tensile strength and toughness on the steel wires is discussed, and it provides reference for the same types of steel wires. The strength of the steel wire ropes is acquired by the results of the tensile test, and the toughness of wire ropes is obtained by the results of bending and twisting test. The conclusion is obtained by experiment as follow. The unqualified number in the tensile test is 10, the loss of the strength is 3.75%. The unqualified number in the bending test is 4, the loss of the toughness is 17.6. The unqualified number in the twisting test is 82, the loss of the twisting toughness is 38.8% and is largest, and it indicates that the twisting ability of the rust-corroded wire ropes does not exist.
