Method for Verifying the Designed Performances of Point-contact Tooth Surfaces of Spiral Bevel and Hypoid Gears

A method for verifying the designed performances of point-contact tooth surfaces is introduced, in which the validity of the designed parameters of the tooth surfaces for the expected performances is verified with the movements of the tooth contact point in two reference directions and the change rate of the gear pair transmission ratio. Theoretical formulae for the calculations of the movements and the change rate are derived according to theories of gear transmission and differential geometry. The formulae without machine settings are only related to the parameters within second order of a pair of tooth surfaces and are suitable for any contact point on the tooth surfaces. By means of these formulae, the movements of the tooth contact point in two reference directions and the change rate of the gear pair transmission ratio can be determined from the parameters within second order of a pair of tooth surfaces under the condition that the equations of the tooth surfaces are not known. With these formulae, the meshing performances of the point-contact tooth surfaces can be verified at the same time as the parameters of the tooth surfaces are designed. The method is demonstrated through an example.
