Investigation on Mechanical Properties and XPS Testing of Biomass-based Particleboards

The purpose of the study was to use a cheap bio-material such as the wheat straw to manufacture particleboard. The experiments were carried out using wheat straw that had no economical value other than being used merely as low grade fuel and fodder. The particleboard was produced using the urea-formaldehyde (UF) adhesives modified by emulsifiable polymeric methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (EPU). The properties of the bio-mass based particleboard was evaluated by measuring internal bonding strength(IB), thickness swelling, modulus of rupture(MOR), modulus of elasticity (MOE) and formaldehyde emission. An analytical technique X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis, was attempted to assess the influence of the straw and different composite adhesive ratio on the properties of straw particleboard.
