The effect of descent techniques on fuel economy
Controlling fuel cost is always a problem of airliners, because the fuel consumption is huge during the flight procedures. This paper is to study the fuel flow consumption both in Continuous Descent Approach /Arrival (CDA) procedures and conventional step-down procedures. A fuel flow estimate method is established based on idle thrust, while the idle thrust specifically in descent approach is proposed by EUROPEAN CIVIL AVIATION CONFE- RENCE. We applies this estimate method and combines with actual flight data of B737-800 aircraft to estimate the fuel consumption in Continuous Descent Approach and convent-ional step-down procedures. Finally, we have obtained the fuel consumption in Continuous Descent Approach less than conventional step-down procedures.
