JCOM: An Application Server with Component Migration
Most of existing application servers do not provide the capability to support dynamic component migration or cannot meet the requirements of the distribution of dynamic components. In this paper, an improved J2EE (Java 2 platform enterprise edition) application server is presented by combine both component migration and interceptor mechanisms into existing J2EE framework seamlessly. Then, the component migration model for JBoss, an open-source J2EE application server, is proposed, and a component migration framework is defined. Consequently, key issues related to accomplish our system, JCOM-JBoss with COmponent Migration are discussed. JCOM combines component migration and interceptor techniques. The former is the migration of a component instance from one application server process to another at runtime, through component migration algorithms and mechanisms which are implemented by developing the Mbeans (management beans). The latter is a technique that transparently adding the component migration services to application server by the development of the interceptors. Both mechanisms, together, make the JCOM well-suited to the rapidly changing environmental conditions at runtime, and meet the requirement of dynamic redistribution of application servers. Compared with JBoss, experiments show that JCOM enhanced application server performance dramatically.
