Manufacturing Strategy Formalisation: An Inter-organisational Perspective
This paper advocates that technology selection is a basic component of manufacturing strategy and provides a process based methodology for selecting manufacturing technology in the shape of a formalised process. The developed technology selection approach is implemented in the aerospace industry to test and verify its applicability. The process for technology selection described in this paper takes a holistic approach by considering inter and intraorganisational factors in the technology selection decision making. The intra-organisational factors help the manufacturer to align its technology selection decision making with its manufacturing objectives. The introduction of inter-organisational factors in the technology selection process complements the ever increasing evidence that suggests the higher the level of integration with suppliers and customers in the supply chain the greater the potential benefits.
