Supply Chain Coordination with Buy-back Contracts in a Two-period Selling Season

Supply chain contracts help achieve coordination which allows decentralized decisions of supply chain members to perform a centralized decision for the whole systems. Traditional supply chain contracts models are developed usually assuming that sales prices in the whole sales period are fixed. However, in practice, many short life-cycle commodities always meet a two-period selling season and the prices will be reduced in the second period. Based on classical buy-back contracts models, this paper investigates whether the buy-back contract could coordinate the whole supply chain when facing the reduced prices. We find out the buy-back contract alone does not coordinate the supply chain, and the properly designed buyback contract plus cost sharing policy or sales rebate policy is able to achieve channel coordination and lead to a Pareto improving win-win situation for supply chain members. Our contribution in this paper is that we develop a proper contract to coordinate the supply chain when short life-cycle commodities meet a two-period selling season.
