Maintenance Management: A Review of What Models Are Being Used in Industry Today

Due to the ever increasing importance of maintenance and its management, this paper seeks to identify the various maintenance management models found in the maintenance literature and determine which models are popular in practice today. The study identified 34 different maintenance models and from this list three were found to clearly dominate the literature; Total Productive Maintenance (TPM), Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM), and Reliability-Centred Maintenance (RCM). The literature on these 3 models was further reviewed to determine articles with links to empirical ‘real world’ maintenance applications, research country, field and industry. The paper provides practitioners and academics with a check-list of the different maintenance models available, and identifies a point-ofreference for each of these models. For practitioners seeking to expand their knowledge of a particular model or how a maintenance management model may fit an organisation, listed references have been chosen for their practical links to present day organisations. In addition, the paper provides readers with a description of the three most popular maintenance management models in practice today.
