Promoting Problem-based Learning in Survey Research Methodology in Supply and Operations Management – Design and Effectiveness of a Course in China

The paper investigates the reaction of PhD students and junior faculty at a leading Chinese business school to a six-month course in Survey Research Methodology (in particular, supply chain management and entrepreneurship) that used problem-based learning experiences. A major challenge was presenting an “intimidating quantitative course while bridging variation in learner backgrounds, such as variable previous knowledge, interests, research and writing skills. We present the course design and report on its effectiveness. Preliminary results indicate that a problem-based learning approach is more successful than the traditional techniquebased course format students were used to previously. To our knowledge, this is the first course in this field taught at a leading business school in China that predominantly integrated problem-based learning experiences.
