The Benefits of Applying Participatory Action Research Methodologies to Supply and Operations Management
This paper explores the merits of Participatory Action Research methodologies in supply and operations management. We describe the objective, the benefits, and the use of Participatory Action Research (PAR) methodologies from a comparative perspective based on our previous research in the social sciences with our businessrelated research in China. We hypothesize that in China, PAR methods will contribute to increased worker productivity, safety, and satisfaction, greater efficiency of products and processes, and a fostering of multi-leveled stakeholder dialogues. We explore factors that contribute to successful implementation of PAR methods in business and illustrate possible supply and operations management cases with examples. Preliminary results are provided from our multi-disciplinary joint research project between a medicine and operations management department from the U.S. as well as a leading business school in China.
