Comparative Analysis of Evolution between Economic Development and Rural-urban Income Inequality in the Yangtze River Delta: 1993-2005

In this paper, we compare regional economic development with regional income inequality and its evolution in the Yangtze River Delta based on a set of data on GDP Per Capita, Rural Per Capita net Income and Urban Per Capita disposable Income in prefecture level. We apply a decomposition method of the General Entropy Measures to analyze the evolution of rural-urban income inequalities, rural-rural income inequalities and urban-urban income inequalities. The Plots shows that the rural-urban inequalities increase rapidly in recent years while the rural-rural inequalities almost stable. We find that the rural-urban income inequalities account for the main share of the total inequality, and the change of income inequalities in the Yangtze River Delta has a structure different from national level. There exists a great discrepancy between the increment of economic development and the change of the income inequalities from 1997 to 2001, but they become consistent between 2001 and 2005. These finds may have important implication for regional policy makers.
