The Dynamics of Urban-rural Income Inequality in China: A Nonparametric Approach

Chinas growth performance since the start of economic reforms in 1978 has been impressive, but the gains have not been distributed equally across households. We use the panel data of household incomes extracted from the China Nutrition and Health Survey, to depict the dynamic of the urban-rural income inequality by applying kernel density estimation, cumulative distribution function as well as Lorenz curve. The results find: The income distributions shift to the right over time, but gradually move toward the bimodal distribution, which illuminates that most of households share the results from rapid economic growth; however, the higher-income family shared more than lower-income family, and urban family shared more than rural family.
