A Dual-Carrier IR-Based UWB Transmitter with Improved Spectral Efficiency

This paper describes a dual-carrier pulse-based ultra-wideband (UWB) transmitter for wireless personal area networks (WPANs). The UWB transmitter designed in 0.18μm CMOS realizes an impulse radio communication using 3-5GHz and 6-10GHz bands with low power and low complexity. By using the multi-phase technique, the proposed dual band transmitter significantly reduces the noise power in 5-6GHz WLAN bands while meeting the FCC noise mask efficiently. Binary phase shift keying (BPSK) and pulse position modulation (PPM) are employed to generate pulses of 1ns duration and two center frequencies of 4GHz and 8GHz. Simulation results show that the pulse generator consumes 8.1pJ/b with the minimum data rate of 1Gb/s. When the system works in high speed mode, the dual band pulse carries two bits per period to have the data rate doubled.
