Case Study on NATM Tunnel Collapse with Soft Ground

As tunnel excavation method and auxiliary method improve along with a measuring instrument, recently, tunnel collapse cases were occasionally reported in various construction conditions, such as shallow depth, groundwater, the unconsolidated ground and weathered rock mass and etc. The ground and excavation condition where tunnel collapse occurs repeats in the similar environment. It is very important to prevent repeated social damage by analyzing the cause and characteristics of the previous failure cases in order to make safe and economy tunnel construction. This paper described the two case studies for understanding of the collapse causes and parameters in NATM tunnel. Analysis of runnel collapse cases indicated interesting features on failure mechanism that inflow and movement of groundwater with soil, shallow depth, soft ground type by site investigation, and the development of plastic zone or shear band from tunnel shoulder by numerical analysis.
