Vacuum Testing of a Sample of Long Service Vacuum Interrupters
The paper describes the measurement of vacuum in a sample of 10 vacuum interrupters that have been in service for over 20 years, using the inverse magnetron method. We found that some still had a good vacuum, and in some the vacuum had deteriorated but they were still good for several more years of service. In one the pressure had risen to such a level that it failed a high voltage test. This shows that it is feasible to assess whether interrupters should be replaced at the end of their nominal service lives or may be used for a further period.
