A Multivariable Aging Model for Estimating Residual Lifetime of XLPE Cable Insulation
As the power cable insulation degrades with the age of the cable, it is necessary to know how long it will take for the insulation to age before failure occurs. It is important to know the lifetime of the insulation under multiple stresses or factors affecting it during operation of the cable. In this study, we developed a new multivariable linear regression aging model for XLPE cable using FTIR value and electrical breakdown strength. A primary incentive for this research is to reduce costs due to accidental failures, and to optimize cable replacement and maintenance schedules. This study showed that these objectives can be reached by collecting a number of field aged samples experiencing the same weather conditions and then by performing experiments in the laboratory.
