INNOVATIONS IN THE DRUG INDUSTRY: ADVANTAGES OF LEADING COMPANIES

The highly sustainable advantage of industry leaders, both in the market and in innovation activities, is a distinctive character of the drug industry. This article begins by examining this character, using data and historical descriptions of the industry. Then, two groups of explanations are presented: the first one considers the process of drug development, emphasizing its special pattern of cost and risk; the second group of explanations considers the impact of technology change, highlighting the science-driven nature of drug development and the role of patent protection. Finally, the implications of public policy and corporate strategy are briefly discussed.
