RESEARCH ON RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN INTERFIRM KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER AND INNOVATION: THE PERSPECTIVE OF FRAMEWORK OF COMPONENT-ARCHITECTURAL KNOWLEDGE

Although the positive role of interfirm knowledge transfer in improving innovation performance has been confirmed extensively, we still have known little about by what way innovation performance has be improved by interfirm knowledge transfer behind the positive role, within the mainstream framework of explicit-tacit knowledge in literature. Based on Henderson and Clarks (1990) work, therefore, an alternative framework of component-architectural knowledge is used to reveal the way performance consequence of innovation can be improved by interfirm knowledge transfer in this paper. Drawing from the data of top ten Chinese TV manufacturers from 2000-2007, we find that (1) innovation performance can be improved increasingly by architectural knowledge transfer; (2) the innovation performance is curvilinear (inverted U-curve) function of component knowledge transfer; (3) the higher knowledge complexity, the more innovation performance can be improved by component knowledge transfer, just opposed to the case of architectural knowledge transfer; and (4) the higher knowledge dispersion, the more innovation performance can be improved by architectural knowledge transfer, just opposed to the case of component knowledge transfer. Our results may lay the foundation for the exploration of the strategy consequence, besides above performance consequence, of innovation benefited from interfirm knowledge transfer within the framework of component-architectural knowledge.
