FROM START-UP TO MATURITY: MOTIVATION STUDIES BASED IN THREE CHINESE PHARMACEUTICAL AND MEDICAL DEVICE COMPANIES
Research on factors influencing high-tech start-up and growth is long-standing. Nevertheless, little is known as to what motivates Chinese retiree entrepreneurs to start-up their own businesses after retirement and what challenges they face en route to grow their businesses. The objective of this paper is to investigate the motivational factors of Chinese retiree entrepreneurs. Based on in-depth case studies of three Chinese private enterprises in the pharmaceutical and medical devices industries, our findings reveal some idiosyncrasies of Chinese retiree entrepreneurs in starting and growing their businesses, which are then discussed in the context of China as an emerging market. Theoretical and practical implications are also discussed.
