Changes in the growth hormone/insulin-like growth factor-I azis during the early postnatal development of Tibet piglets (a typical mini pig)

A total of forty-two (21 male and 21 female) suckled Tibet piglets (a typical mini pig) were divided into seven groups at the ages of d 1, 4, 7, 14, 21, 28, and 35 after brith, to investigate the development changes in body weight (BW), the weight of liver relative to body weight (Liver/BW), the weight of longissimus dorsi (LD) relative to body weight (LD/BW), the concentration for GH in serum and IGF-I in serum, liver and LD, and mRNA abundance for GH receptor (GHR), IGF-I and IGF-I receptor (IGF-IR) in liver and LD, respectively. No significant effects (P>0.05) were observered between male and female piglet for the weight, the concentration and mRNA abundance at total development period. But significant differences (P<0.05) among ages and different dvelopment curve pattern of age effects (P<0.05) were seen for the weight, the concentration and mRNA abundance during the postnatal stage from day 1 to day 35 after brith. Interestingly, the serum GH concentration was poorly related to other concentration, weight and mRNA abundance. However, serum IGF-I concentration was correlated (P<0.05; r = -0.40 and -0.46) with liver IGF-I mRNA abundance and BW, liver IGF-I concentration was correlated (P<0.05; r = -0.57, -0.63, 0.37, -0.80, 0.52, and -0.49) with liver GHR, Liver and LD IGF-I mRNA abundance, BW, Liver/BW and LD/BW, LD IGF-I concentration was correlated (P<0.05; r = -0.38, 0.35, and -0.46) with liver and LD IGF-I mRNA abundance and BW, liver IGF-I mRNA abundance was correlated (P<0.05; r = 0.83, -0.35, and 0.45) with BW, Liver/BW and LD/BW, LD IGF-I mRNA abundance was correlated (P<0.05; r = 0.74, -0.54, and -0.33) with LD IGF-IR mRNA abundance, BW, and LD/BW, respectively. It implicated that the development change for IGF-I was correlated with body weight.
