Microarray analysis of genes in small intestine of IUGR piglets

Affymetrix porcine GeneChip was used to explore differentially expressed genes in the small intestinal mucosa of IUGR (Intrauterine growth restriction) and NBW (normal birth weight) piglets in this study. Five NBW (BW 1503 ± 310 g) and five IUGR (BW 806 ± 35 g) piglets were killed at 21 days of age and the samples were collected. Our results showed that there were 561 differentially expressed genes in the small intestine from IUGR compared to NBW piglets. Compared with age-matched NBW piglets, mRNA levels for 255 genes were reduced in the small intestine of IUGR piglets, while 306 genes were increased. For example, the expression level of Argininosuccinate synthetase 1 and Cytochrome P450 3A29 gene was 6-fold and 4-fold higher in the IUGR piglets than that of NBW piglets respectively, while the expression level of Metallothionein gene and urate transporter channel protein gene was reduced 10-fold and 5-fold in the IUGR piglets, respectively. Our findings not only provide new insights into the molecular mechanisms of small intestinal mucosa in IUGR piglets, but also serve as a valuable resource to researchers investigating IUGR piglets.
