Classification of Spatial Structures of Metropolitan Areas Based on Traffic Organization:the Uniqueness and Innovations of“Beijing Pattern
Metropolitan area is a highly urbanized area made up of a core large city and its surrounding areas in sufficient proximity to be considered a single urban complex.Because of its large population, extensive territory, aggregate functions and close interconnections between its inside and outside, the space organizations of metropolitan areas are so complicated and varied that it is difficult to identify and classify the patterns of their spatial structures. This paper reviews the former classification studies and finds they were mainly based on functionmorphology.Considering that there exists coupling relationship between the transit system and land use or development of metropolitan area and it has direct and determining influence on the space form of metropolitan area, traffic organization can be used as an important perspective of study on the classification of space structures of metropolitan areas.Based on the organization pattern of traffic and the coupling relationship between the transit system and land use or development, the spatial structures of metropolitan areas can be theoretically divided into three main classes and nine subdivisions.Beijing, the capital of the Peoples Republic of China, has a total area of 16 410.54 sq.kin and a population of about 17 million (2008).Since 1980s Beijing began to go onto the track of rapid and large-scale development through the reform and opening up and has initially generated a new pattern of spatial structure of metropolitan area, which is based on rapid motor transit system with the typical characteristics of concentric layout and high-density development.Through the comparisons of the patterns of spatial structure between Greater Beijing and the main metropolitan areas aboard such as Greater Moscow,Greater London,Greater New York,Greater Tokyo,Greater Paris,Greater Los Angle etc.,the study reveals that the emerging pattern of Beijing is unique in the theoretical pedigree of spatial structures of metropolitan areas and is the innovative production of the era of motor with distinctive Chinese features, and maybe is the first pattern generated in the developing country which is full of viability.
