What Affect the Home-work Decision in Chinese Two-earner Households? A discrete-continuous choice modeling analysis
The existing research of home-work links are limited to take into account intrahousehold interaction between male and female head in a two-earner household,as well as fewer in the background of China,particularity in light of the local and social context．This paper formulates and estimates a joint discrete-continuous model that includes a multinomial logit component to analyze the intra-household choice of the gender-based commuting priority (GBCP)．and the inter-individual choice of commuting time of two earners(TECT)in the lower continuous component．Data for the analysis are drawn from a 2007 Beijing activity dairy survey,including 258 households in 10 communities．The results indicate that,first,the effects of school children,working and in-home maintenance activity duration on the decision of household commuting priority basically coincide with the household responsibility hypothesis in western society that the female shoulder more household responsibility would like to commute less than the male．Second,special cultural and institutional factors in China broadly affect the household home-work decision．The family holders authority makes them more likely to profit themselves to have less commuting time than their spouses,especially for female holder,who seems to,however,aggravate the commuting burden than that of less power within the female group．Third,Danwei welfare of housing tenure enhances the family holders authority to choose their commuting priority．And not all the members living in the Danwei housing commute less in spite of the Danwei household generate less total commuting time．Finally,while considering the interaction among the household,the job-housing balance policy should construct more uniform job accessibility to both the male and female from the residential community．
