EARLY-AGE SHRINKAGE AND CRACKING OF SELF-COMPACTING CONCRETE: MEASUREMENT TECHNIQUES AND MITIGATION STRATEGIES
Self-Compacting Concrete (SCC) has superior flowability and self-compactability, and doesnt need vibration compared with traditional ordinary concrete. However, SCC has generally higher shrinkage and crack attendance, especially at early ages. This paper discusses the early-age shrinkage and cracking behaviour of SCC, particularly the early-age autogenous strain, settlement shrinkage and plastic shrinkage cracking. New measurement techniques are introduced to evaluate the early-age shrinkage and cracking properties. Several mitigation strategies, including shrinkage compensating technique, shrinkage reducing agent, super absorbent polymer, and a new type of water evaporation reducing agent are discussed for restraining both autogenous strain and plastic shrinkage cracking.
