SIGNIFICANCE OF MORTAR FILM THICKNESS TO THE WORKABILITY OF SCC

Fresh self-consolidating concrete (SCC) can be considered as a two-phase material composing of coarse aggregate phase and mortar phase. The coarse aggregate phase provides a skeleton for the concrete while the mortar phase plays a dual role in filling the voids between the coarse aggregate particles and serving as a flowing medium to provide the workability. In this connection, the mortar film thickness should have an effect on the workability of SCC. In this study, 30 batches of SCC were produced and their workability was evaluated by measuring the slump flow, T500 time and V-funnel discharge rate. The mortar film thickness of each batch of SCC was determined from the packing density of the coarse aggregate and the mortar volume of the concrete. It was found that the workability of the SCC varied linearly with mortar film thickness. The significance of mortar film thickness increases as the superplasticizer dosage decreases. From the results, a formula is proposed to determine the workability of SCC from mortar film thickness and superplasticizer dosage. The use of this formula may simplify the mix proportioning of SCC mixes.
