DC-DC Converter integration: Fact, Fiction and Realization of Single Package Solutions verses Discrete
For power system designers, the insatiable power appetite of digital chipsets creates significant challenges with lower output voltages, higher current densities and increasing switching frequencies. As designers strive to increase system efficiency, reduce BOM cost and simplify design, the tried and tested design approaches implementing discrete components are nearing saturation and therefore small, but significant, changes in interpretation and approach are required. Focusing on one of the most progressive fields in DC-DC conversion – the single phase voltage rail Point of Load Converter – or POL, this paper with compare and contrast integrated verses discrete converter approaches under POL typical circuit operating conditions.
