State-of-the-art power electronic capacitors for modern IGBT converter DC link applications
The ongoing developments in converter technology, especially since IGBT semiconductors have become state of the art components, have continuously stimulated innovations of power electronic capacitors (PEC) which are used within the DC link circuit. Film capacitor-based DC link solutions are now implemented in all kinds of drives and frequency converters, ranging from industrial devices with a few kW to power transmission systems with up to several hundred MW. The general application range of power electronic capacitors covers power generation, power transmission, all kinds of power conversion and the wide area of power quality applications. The classical applications served with power electronic capacitors for the DC link are high power drives and traction equipment as well as medical devices. As renewable energy sources become increasingly important, wind power and even solar converters move into the picture. At the same time the development activities in the area of hybrid electric vehicles (HEV) have grown steadily over the years. These various applications require components that cover a broad range of capacitor ratings. The various design concepts may call for standard solutions as well as customized products that are system integration ready. In addition to the basic electrical parameters of voltage, capacitance and current, nowadays further aspects such as temperature regimes, failure scenarios, life-cycle considerations and environmental requirements determine the layout of modern power electronic capacitors. In order to serve even the most individual wishes of mechanical adaptation, system integration and electrical connections, a complete capacitor toolbox is needed that employs different winding designs such as round, flat and stacked windings, or special concepts like ring-shaped circular windings. Typically, high temperature polypropylene (PP) is the dielectric material of choice with film thicknesses of down to less than 3 μm. Various metallization patterns are used which are prepared by evaporated aluminum (Al) or zinc/aluminum layers. Rounding out the building blocks are impregnation and encapsulation options that range from standard oil impregnation in closed stainless steel cases to resin-filled aluminium case components with one facet of the capacitor retained as a resin surface. Even the most demanding DC link requirements can be met with these technological options, and capacitors can be designed for decades of service life if required.
