PrimePACK(TM) Reliability Consideration in Doubly-fed wind power system

Doubly-fed wind turbines are widely employed in wind power application due to its small converter size, variable speed operation and good control performance. However, the current frequency of rotor side converter is quite low, which leads to high temperature swings in the rotor converter. The lifetime of wind turbine and its power converter is strictly demanded; therefore the rotor side converter needs to be specifically designed / oversized to meet the required power cycling and thermal cycling capability. As the key component of the power converter, IGBT modules need special design to meet the stringent requirement in wind power application. This paper presents the big improvements of lifetime when PrimePACK. (Infineon latest high power IGBT module) is applied to the doubly-fed system. Due to some key innovations on package technology and chip technology introduced on this paper, PrimePACK~(TM) module demonstrates excellent power cycling and thermal cycling capability compared to old products, which is very suitable for doubly-fed wind application.
