DISCRETE SIMULATION OF BALLAST IN SITE BEHAVOUR UNDER CYCLIC LOADING
In this paper, ballast-sleeper interaction under different loadings is simulated using a 2D discrete element method (DEM) which is a usual tool for discontinuous rock simulation. In the present paper, we use Voronoi tessellation for producing a set of irregular polygonal ballast particles. UDEC? program is used to simulate ballast-sleeper interaction under cyclic loading and the effects on ballast settlement, force distribution. Results show realistic response of ballast such as progressive cumulative settlement and lateral wall displacement under cyclic load as well as load spreading through ballast layer. It signified that UDEC is a potential tool to simulate mechanical behavior of ballast under More quantitatively accurate results are expected by using 3D particles and introducing contact damage model.
