NUMERICAL SIMULATION ON EXCAVATION-DAMAGED ZONE (EDZ) IN FRACTURED ROCKMASS UNDER COUPLED THERMAL-HYDRAULIC-MECHANICAL (THM) CONDITIONS

The creation of an excavation damaged zone (EDZ) is expected around all man-made openings in civil engineering, in underground mining, and in petroleum engineering. Understanding the development of EDZ under coupled thermal, hydraulic and mechanical (THM) conditions is of great importance for evaluating the engineering stability and safety, and for optimizing the supporting parameters. The work begins with the characterization of rock mass heterogeneity by using the digital image-based technique. Next, a coupled THM model for the rock damage is used, in which the damage variable is incorporated into the classic thermohydroelastic model based on elastic damage theory. The model is validated against some existing experimental observations. Finally, the model is used to simulate the formation and development of EDZ under coupled THM environments and the effect of heterogeneity of rock mass on the THM coupling is analyzed.
