STABILITY ANALYSIS OF FINAL PIT SLOPE WALLS AT SUNGUN COPPER MINE-IRAN
Sungun copper mine is the second largest open pit mine of Iran located in North West mountainous region of the country. The Sungun ore body is a copper porphyry deposit and the mine is designed to produce 7 Mtpa ore with future expansions of up to 14 Mtpa. The Sungun ore body is located in a deep valley with local topography ranging from 1700 m to 2450 m. The initial pit design is based on a maximum of 765 m slope walls. The geometrical and Geomechanical conditions at Sungun pit necessitated a through slope stability analysis of Sungun final pit slopes. Accordingly, the pit area was divided into representative geotechnical domains and a complete rock mass characterization was carried out for each domain. With regard to variations in geology and material property, a sophisticated numerical modeling analysis was initiated. Both continuum and discontinuum modeling techniques were used to construct 2D final pit slopes at predefined mine sections. The stability of varying pit slope angles were assessed and compared against pit slope angles determined by classic limit equilibrium methods. The analysis results showed that the limit equilibrium method predicted a very conservative pit slope angles and final pit slope angles at Sungun can be increased up to 5 degrees while maintaining the required safety factors.
