Can Crop Yield, Nutrient Use Efficiency and Soil Productivity be Increased at the Same Time?

Accomplishments and challenges in crop production in ChinaSince 1949, especially when China initiated economic reforms and the open-door policy in the 1980s, Chinas economy has made great strides. In 2007, Chinas GDP was 24661.9 billion RMB. The growth of total agricultural production has been one of Chinas main accomplishments, successfully feeding 22% of the global population with only 9% of the worlds arable land. Nevertheless, Chinas grain security still faces multiple pressures from resource limitation, environmental pollution and population growth. To meet the increasing demand for grain from a growing population, China needs to produce 520 - 580 Mt of grains annually by 2050. This will require a substantial improvement in nutrient use efficiency and decreased land degradation, which is a great challenge to China in the near future.
