Molecular Mechanisms of Organic Acid Ezudation as Affected by Phosphorus and Aluminum Interactions in Soybean

Aluminum (Al) toxicity and phosphorus (P) deficiency often coexist, which severely limit crop growth and production. The most documented physiological mechanism for plant Al tolerance involves in Al-induced release of organic acids from roots. Our previous studies indicated that P-efficient genotypes were more Al tolerant through both direct and indirect Al-P interactions associated with stimulated exudation of organic acids from specific roots and root regions. In this study, we characterized a malate transporter ( GmALMT1) and a citrate transporter ( GmAltSB) from soybean and investigated their temporally and spatially expression patterns as related to exudation of organic acids in Al-P interactions, as well as their potential biological functions for Al tolerance in soybean by hairy root transformation.
