Secretion of Citrate from Roots in Response to Al and Low-P in Stylosanthes
Stylo (Stylosanthes) root response to Al and low P was investigated in the present study. Citrate was secreted after the exposure of roots to Al for about 4 h, while citrate was secreted from 6 d after free-P treatment. The amount of citrate secreted during the Al exposure from P-deficiency roots was greater than from P-sufficiency roots. Moreover, more citrate was secreted from Al-resistant cultivars than from Al-sensitive ones. Al-induced secretion was inhibited by niflumic acid, phenylisothiocyanate, and sodium azide, resulting in more Al accumulation in the root apices. These results indicate that adaptation of roots in stylo to both Al and low-P stress may be achieved via citrate secretion.
