Influence of Aluminum on Pectin Polysaccharides of Cell Walls from Root and Border Cells of Pea (Pisum Sativum)

Polysaccharides of cell wall pectin 1 and 2 from pea root tips were separated by gel chromatography (Sephacryl(TM) S-200). Only in pectin 1 two fractions, a high and low molecular weight ( Mw) polysaccharide, were found in border cells and root segments of pea by gel chromatography (Sephacryl(TM) S-200). The Mw weight of the latter increased from 3. 32 KD to 4.42 KD in border cells and the 0 - 10mm root segment and from 1. 86 KD to 3. 13 KD in 10 -20mm root segment after exposure to Al. Only one high Mw polysaccharide of cell wallpectin 2 was found independent of origin and Al treatment. The results indicate that the Al-induced low molecular mass polysaccharide from pectin 1 might be involved in Al binding resulting in cell-wall rigidification as well as inhibition of root elongation under Al toxicity.
