A Study on Aluminium Resistance Mechanisms of Transgenic Tobacco Overezpressing Citrate Synthase and Malate Dehydrogenase

The carbon skeleton used for synthesis of organic acids is supplied from photosynthesis. To investigate whether over-expressions of citrate synthase ( CS) and malate dehydrogenase (MDH) in the leaves of plants would improve their resistance to Al or not, we generated transgenic tobacco plants overexpressing CS and MDH under the control of tomato rbcS-3C promoter and CaMV35S promoter. The overexpressed CS and MDH were localized in the cytoplasm. Our assessment showed that the transgenic tobacco lines were much more tolerant to Al than wild-type plants after exposure to 25 -50 μM Al. The Al-resistance mechanisms of the transgenic plants were further analyzed.
