Genetics of Phosphorus Efficiency in Tropical Maize
An inheritance study of P use efficiency and it component P acquisition and P internal utilization efficiency was conducted in seven tropical maize crosses obtained from inbred lines contrasting for these traits. The parents, Fls, BC1 and BC2 for both parents were evaluated in three low P and two high P environments. Non additive gene action (dominance and epistasis) was more important than additive gene action for the majority of the traits studied. Selection criteria and breeding strategies for these traits are discussed. Higher importance of P acquisition efficiency than P internal utilization efficiency over P use efficiency was verified.
