Al Tolerance and Inorganic Nitrogen Utilization: Two Closely Related Genetic Traits in Rice
Al stress and NH4+ nutrition often coexist in acidic soils due to low pH and weak nitrification ability. The role of NH4+ in alleviating Al toxicity has been proven in some plants ( Rorison, 1985 ). Rice is the most Al-resistant species among small grain cereal crops ( Ma et al., 2002) and prefers NH4+ as its major inorganic N source ( Zhao and Shi, 2006 ). Our results show NH4+ can alleviate Al toxicity of rice compared with NO3- , and Al tolerance and inorganic N utilization in rice are closely related.
