Natural Basalt as a Potential Amendment for Highly Weathered Acid Soils

Basaltrocks, which are naturally available and contain many essential elements, were used to improve properties of a highly weathered acid Oxisol ( pH < 4.3 ). The results showed that basalt application ( 0 to 80 t · ha-1 ) significantly increased soil pH from about 3. 8 to 6.5, depending on basalt rates. On the other hand, values of pH0 and point zero net charge ( PZNC) decreased, indicating basalt application is able to generate negative charge. The charge generation ranged from 5.5 to 11.9 cmol c · kg-1. Basalt application also significantly increased Ca, Mg, K, Na and Si but significantly suppressed toxic elements ( Al and Mn) of in situ soil solution. The implication of the study is potential of basalt to be used to restore properties of acid soils.
