Growth Responses of Pea to Different Species of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi as Affected by P Treatments in Acid Soils

Effects of the arbuscular mycorrhizal ( AM) fungi on the growth of pea were assessed at acid soils under low P and high P conditions. The results showed pea plants grew poorly under low P condition, particularly in the absence of AM colonization. Growth was enhanced both by increasing the P availability and by inoculating with the AM fungi. The ability of the three fungi to colonize pea roots differed greatly on acid soils. S. Calospora was much more effective than the other two fungi. The total root length and P uptake in S. Calospora plants were significantly higher than the other two AM plants and NM plants.
