Boron Deficiency in Acid Soils and Its Role in Root Phosphorus Acquisition Strategy of P-Efficient Genotypes

Boron ( B) deficiency is widespread in acid soils of subtropical and tropical regions, due to its high mobility and leaching loss at acidic pH. Based on B roles in cell walls and membranes, root strategies of P-acquisition efficiency in crops may be significantly undermined by B deficiency, which are critical for improving crop fertiliser-P recovery rate in acid soils. Boron deficiency may alter P-efficient root architecture and impair root tip functions for dissolution of P-minerals in the rhizosphere. Innovative B-fertiliser technology is needed to maintain continuing B supply in acid soils for effective expression of P-efficiency traits of crops.
