Water Management, Irrigation Performance and Grain Yields of Rice on Acidic Wetlands Soils in Nigeria
Rice is a major staple in Nigeria and is grown in all agro-ecological zones either as rainfed, irrigated ( i. e. as supplementary or full) , deep water/flood prone, or mangrove ecologies. It is grown both by small scale (or informal irrigators) (IFS) and large scale ( or formal irrigators) ( FIS) farmers. There is the general notion that grain yields (GY) of irrigated rice under FIS irrigation schemes are higher than that of IFS schemes. In order to test this hypothesis, a survey was conducted on one of the oldest irrigation rice schemes in Nigeria where there is ample presence of both formal and informal irrigators. The aim of the study was to estimate the average farm size (AFS) , volume of water used for irrigation (VWI) /season, water productivity (WP) , relative water supply ( RWS) on these two schemes and to identify best water management options for wetland rice on these soils with acidic pH. Data on AFS, VWI, WP, GY, RWS, socio-economic and soil and water bio-physical properties were collected in 2006 using 214 (informal irrigators) and 151 (formal irrigators). Results showed that the soil pH is slightly acidic (5. 3) , the sodium absorption ration was 0.32 in both formal and informal farm sites. The AVS, VWI, WP, RWS and GY were significantly (p <0. 05) higher (i. e. formal (0.453 ha) vs informal (1. 86ha); 142353m3 (informal) and 179 m3; 0.602 (formal) vs (0.028), 10.24 (informal) vs 0. 694 (formal), and 3.433t/ha (formal) vs 3. 362t/ha (informal)). The study concluded and proved the notion that the irrigation performance on formal scheme was better than that of informal in terms of performance indicators used and GY, which suggests that the former was better managed than the latter.
