Tithonia Compost as a Soil Amendment for Improving Soil Fertility and Maize Grain Yield in Ultisols
Field experiments, using 3 replications, were conducted with the objectives to determine the best bio-agent for composting of tithonia, improve soil fertility and increase yield of maize in Ultisols. The treatments, totaling seven, used in a randomized block design (RBD) were tithonia composted with either Orgadec, EM4, or Stardec bioagent and tithonia composted without bio-agent. Three additional treatments included for comparison were fresh tithonia; 100% commercial fertilizer (com-fert); and another control ( without input). The results showed that all types of tithonia compost were able to inprove soil fertility (increased pH, N and K contents in soils). Though almost similar grain yields of maize were obtained, the tithonia composted with Stardec gave the best result by reducing the use of N and K commercial fertilizers to 50% and getting the highest grain yield of maize of 6. 7 t · ha-1 .
