Model Updating of Earthquake-Ezcited Building Structures with Friction Dampers

The parameter identification and model updating of building structures with friction dampers are actively carried out in this study. A new approach is proposed for identifying the structural stiffness parameters and updating analytical model by using the modal information of structures without/with friction dampers. An identification algorithm for stiffness parameters is first developed based on the full measurement information of natural frequencies and mode shapes. Then, the approach is improved by taking account of the sparsity properties of structural stiffness matrix for constructing a new model updating approach based on added friction dampers. The relationship between dynamic degree-of-freedom (DOF) and the number of modal shapes utilized in analysis is also established. The observations from numerical investigation demonstrate that the performance for parameter identification and model updating are satisfactory because the underdetermining identification problem is transformed into the overdetermining problem by using the proposed approach.
