Evaluation on Earthquake-Induced Sudden Damage of Multistory Building Structures by Using Wavelet Transform

The degradation of civil engineering structures due to intensive earthquake may lead to a sudden loss of structural stiffness in a structure and cause a discontinuity in acceleration response time histories recorded in the vicinity of damage location at damage time instant. A damage detection approach based on wavelet transform is developed and implemented in this paper to detect the damage time instant and location of a multistory building structure due to sudden stiffness damage. Three mother wavelets with different vanishing moments and supporting length in the time domain are utilized for comparing the detection performance on sudden damage events. To examine the feasibility of the wavelet-based detection approach, parameter studies are carried out to investigate the detection quality for different damage severities.
