Field Investigation on Damaged or Collapsed Bridges during the May 12 Wenchuan Earthquake

The May 12 Wenchuan earthquake caused tremendous loss of engineered structures. Based on field investigations immediate after the event, this paper presents several typical collapsed bridges and mechanism analysis results. Four major damage mechanisms for bridges are summarized as: ① Dynamic longitudinal deformation is larger than seating provided by piers and beams fall down, especially for simple supported; ② Weak connection between beams and piers or abutments results in widespread severe bearings damage; ③ Pier foundations are pushed by landslide and piers become inclined and displaced, beams fall down transversely; ④ Dynamic instability of piers laid by stones leads to collapse of supper arch. Statistics shows that the most vulnerable positions are listed in sequence as ① Bearings (displaced or ravaged); ② Anchor bolts of bearings (shear broken); ③ Restrainers (crushed by beam ends); ④ Abutments (displaced or collided by beam ends); ⑤ Beams (displaced or fallen down). Suggestions for improving seismic capability of bridges are made briefly.
